How to get to My Son from Da Nang

My Son Sanctuary, located about 70 km from Da Nang, is always considered as a must-see historical and cultural highlight to visitors to the central Viet Nam.  For those who have a strong interest in ancient cultures, this destination appears as an ideal choice for their travel plan. This article focuses on showing travelers all possible, economical and soothing ways to reach My Son from Da Nang.

My Son Sanctuary with a complex of many Champa temples and unique architecture has got the honor of being ranked as the 9th in the top 10 most beautiful and famous temple complexes in Southeast Asia. My Son Sanctuary is a national relic located in Duy Phu commune, Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province. It is about 70 km southwest of Danang city center, 20 km from Tra Kieu and 45 km west of Hoi An ancient town. In favor of your travel budget and preferred way to get to the place, you can be flexible between the below transportation recommendations. How to get to My Son Sanctuary from Da Nang city?

1. Getting to My Son By public bus from Da Nang

The bus route number 06 is the one you are looking for, with its specific schedule information below:

●      Route length Da Nang – My Son: over 70 km

●      Bus Route: Danang Central Bus Station – Dien Bien Phu – Le Duan – Hoang Hoa Tham – Ham Nghi – Le Dinh Ly – Nguyen Tri Phuong – Trung Nu Vuong – Duy Tan – Nui Thanh – Canh Mang Thang Tam – Hoa Cam Industrial Park zone – National Highway 1A – Provincial Highway 610 – My Son sanctuary.

Information about Da Nang – My Son bus operating companies:

●  Da Nang Passenger Services and Trading Joint Stock Company.
Tel: 0511.3680670

●  Duy Xuyen Transportation Service and General Business Cooperative.

●  Quang Nam Transportation Joint Stock Company. Tel: 0510.3820011

Hai Van Transportation and Tourism Service Cooperative. Tel: 0511.3649917

Though this is the most economical option, it seems to be a not very flexible means of transportation as you have to wait for specific pickup times according to a fixed schedule, plus usually, it may take longer since the bus has to stop at other pickup stations for more passengers along the way. You also might have difficulty in English communication with the driver and other passengers while using this public transportation.

2.    Shared Shuttle Bus to My Son- Hoi An from Da Nang

This service attracts a lot of travelers thanks to its low travel cost and pleasant convenience. The bus will pick up guests at all hotels in Da Nang then depart for My Son/ Hoi An. You will have the opportunity to discover 2 World Heritage Sites in a day with the cheapest travel expenses.

After touring My Son, a boat will take you to Hoi An. You then can also get to see the stunning peaceful countryside in this part of the central Viet Nam along the two sides of Thu Bon river. The boat dock is located right in Hoi An ancient town center where the river passes through. You only need to walk 300m to visit Japanese covered bridge – Hoi An’s iconic temple which was built in the 17th century. This tourist attraction is a must-see if you just have 1 day time to visit 2 destinations.

You can choose departure time of 8.30 PM to experience nightlife activities such as taking a boat ride along the Hoai River flowing through the town at night, strolling around night markets to taste local street foods and shop for cute specialty souvenirs, releasing lotus-shaped paper lanterns into the river for making a wish as locals do, etc.

The only downside is that you would share the big bus with many strangers, and your time completely depends on a fixed bus schedule.

3.   Getting to My Son from Da Nang By motorbike

Many young travelers, backpackers or ones into road trips can find this the most favorite option as it’s flexible to their travel time for not dependent on fixed bus schedule or any tour program. Motorbike rental in Da Nang is also quite cheap, about 100 – 180k / day depending on the type of vehicle.

Though going by motorbike helps to save quite an amount of your travel cost, it does not sound like the safest option because of traffic density on the long way from Da Nang to My Son Sanctuary with regular traffic police patrol.

Road Direction:

You depart from any point on National Highway 1A southwards to Nam Phuoc town (about 39km), then head west on Route 537 for about 9km more to Tra Kieu.

From Tra Kieu, you ride for another 12km till see an only junction then turn left according to the sign “To My Son, another 9km”. Arriving at My Son, you will take a short rough mountain trail for about 5 minutes and then keep on walking along a stone path leading to My Son Sanctuary at the end.
